The HDD of my Philips system is constantly spinning

The HDD would stop spinning if it supported the power-saving mode. However, not every external HDD supports power-saving modes. The HDD from Philips does support this mode and will spin down after 30 minutes of no activity. Please do consider that the unit might execute background activities such as creation/updating the music/photo database and therefore an immediate spin down might not happen.
