How does the Cry Translation feature work?

Published on 27 August 2024
Baby crying is the universal language newborns use to communicate. We use artificial intelligence and sound recognition to analyse the infant's cries. Cry Translation will help you understand your baby's different cries and tell you what they might mean.

Cry Translation is an advanced technology powered by Zoundream and backed by scientific research that alerts you to your baby's cry. Each cry is analysed against an extensive database of more than 100,000 hours of real babies' cries. It is then instantly translated into one of five types of cry: Sleepy, Hunger, Uncomfortable, Burp or Irritation, making it simpler for you to address your baby's needs. Zoundream's machine-learning algorithm continually improves to deliver personalised information.

To activate the Cry Translation feature, download the Philips Avent Baby Monitor+ App and unlock the feature within the App.
It can take up to 1 minute to analyse the baby's cry and deliver the cry translation to you via the App.

Five types of cry

When a baby cry is detected, a notification is sent through to the Parent Unit and the App. The cry result gets "translated" into one of the following five types of cries:
  1. The Sleepy Cry – your baby is sleepy.
  2. The Hunger Cry – your baby is hungry.
  3. The Uncomfortable Cry – your baby is uncomfortable.
  4. The Burp Cry – your baby needs a burp.
  5. The Irritation Cry – your baby is irritated.
